LEV Inspections

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH) regulations require businesses to assess the risks to workers from hazardous substances – dusts, fumes, vapours, etc. – and decide what measures are required to  protect workers from these hazards.

If the measures adopted include extraction systems such as Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems (LEV’s) to remove the dusts, fumes, vapours etc. produced by processes or activities, then the equipment must be checked and maintained in efficient working order to ensure it provides the necessary protection. The equipment should also have a periodic thorough examination and test by a competent person (at least every *14 months) and must keep this record for at least 5 years. In addition information on the installed LEV system to confirm it provides adequate protection must be maintained and kept for the life of the equipment.

*Thorough inspections may be more frequent if the equipment is used to remove metal particles, or if it is found to be damaged or running in efficiently and/or if the regulations change.

Always check the CoSHH regulations for guidance.
