If your business is currently registered to any of the ISO Management System Standards, you are now required to consider “climate change” within your ISO Management Systems.

It means that your registration Auditor can and will ask the management team how they are complying to the new “shall” that is in all ISO auditable Standards including ISO 9001, 14001, 22001, 22301, 27001, 45001, 50001 or any of the other auditable requirements.

It includes text that requires companies to consider relevance of climate change risks in their analysis of the organisations context and needs of interested parties.

The new climate change amendments are one-line additions to ISO Management System Standards, Clauses 4.1 and 4.2.

Clause 4.1 is about understanding the organisation and its context. The climate change addition to this clause is, “The organisation shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue.”

4.2 Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties where the following sentence is added: “Relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change”.

In short, the new requirement stipulates that organisations shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue and whether relevant interested parties have requirements related to climate change. If found to be a relevant issue, climate change needs to be considered in the development and implementation of the management system. If you already have a management system certified to an ISO standard, you are already conducting this type of contextual analysis. The only difference is that climate change must always be a topic that is considered in your analysis and if found relevant be part of your management system.

Many organisations have already determined how climate change affects their businesses. For those who have yet to do so, this may be an opportunity to start assessing climate change risks and equip the management system to help tackle any challenges.

The ISO 9001:2015/Amendment 1:2024 marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of Quality Management Standards, embedding climate change considerations at the heart of organisational strategies. By specifically requiring companies to assess the relevance of climate change and to consider stakeholder requirements related to environmental sustainability, the standards are setting a new benchmark for quality management in the modern era. This change not only underscores the importance of environmental management and monitoring but also encourages businesses to be more resilient, responsible, and forward-thinking in their operations.

One of the key ways of demonstrating your environmental impact controls and programmes for improvement is by the implementation of an Environmental Management System, commonly known as ISO 14001:2015.

The key benefits of 14001 include:

  • Demonstrates your commitment to improving the environment
  • Lowering business costs through reducing resource consumption and waste production
  • Demonstrate green credentials when responding to tenders and stand out from competitors
  • Management of environmental risks
  • Can increase employee engagement in the knowledge that they are working in an environmentally friendly organisation
  • Meeting environmental legal requirements
  • Helps reduce insurance fees
  • Committing to social responsibilities

QSC can support you in achieving certification to ISO 14001:2015 or any other ISO Standards if you need support.

We can also support you if you would like to start a review of your current ISO Management System

We would recommend the following:

  • Complete a Gap Analysis of your system and identify the areas of compliance and non-compliance.
  • Implement improvements to your management system as necessary.
  • Train the staff in the system to ensure the company gets the best from them and they understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Carry out Internal Audits and finally a Management Review.
  • Then arrange for an External Audit to take place.
